About Bharathakala Naatya Academy
The Kalakshetra Legacy
The roots of Bharathakala Natya Academy trace back to the Kalakshetra tradition established by Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, a pioneering figure who transformed Bharatanatyam into a respected and celebrated classical art form. Through her vision, Kalakshetra became a center for excellence in dance, music, and culture, preserving the guru-shishya tradition while providing a strong institutional foundation for future generations of artists.

Among her distinguished disciples were Smt. Shantha Dhananjayan and Sri V.P. Dhananjayan, who later founded Bharathakalanjali in 1968. Dedicated to preserving the highest standards of Bharatanatyam, Bharathakalanjali has trained generations of dancers and continues to uphold the values of discipline, artistry, and cultural heritage.
The Dhananjayans
Internationally acclaimed Bharatanatyam artists, teachers, and choreographers, Sri V.P. Dhananjayan and Smt. Shantha Dhananjayan are widely recognized for their contributions to Indian classical dance. Honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, they have inspired generations of dancers through their innovative choreography, teaching, and dedication to the art form.

Through Bharathakalanjali, their annual gurukulam programs, and performances across the world, the Dhananjayans have built a global community of students and artists. Their commitment to excellence, cultural education, and artistic integrity continues to influence Bharatanatyam practitioners worldwide and remains a guiding inspiration for Bharathakala Natya Academy.
