Once Upon a Time, Beauty and the Beast
(2014 and 2015)

Conceptualized and choreographed by Smt. Subathra Sudarshan, Once Upon a Time: Beauty and the Beast is a unique dance drama that reimagines the beloved fairy tale through an imaginative blend of fantasy, adventure, and classical dance. The production explores the consequences of jealousy, greed, and deception while celebrating the transformative power of love, friendship, and courage.

The story begins when a prince is cursed by Maleficent and transformed into a beast, losing the noble qualities that define his character. These qualities are scattered among a group of powerful witches, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and redemption. Along the way, Belle, the Beast, Snow White, Mulan, the Huntsman, and the Seven Dwarfs join forces to recover the lost virtues and overcome the forces of evil. Narrated by the Genie, the production unfolds through a series of captivating twists and turns, ultimately revealing the triumph of goodness over malice.

Bringing together beloved fairy tale characters including Maleficent, Ursula, the Wicked Witch of the West, Medusa, the White Witch, and others, the production combines Bharatanatyam, theatrical storytelling, and innovative stagecraft to create a magical experience for audiences of all ages. Smt. Subathra Sudarshan takes on the role of Maleficent, while specially designed costumes, custom props, video backdrops, and the contributions of numerous artists and technicians bring this enchanting world to life on stage.
